The Human Experience: Film Review by 3rd Dog Script

This International Independent Film is shockingly inspiring!

I attended a screening of The Human Experience in Louisville Kentucky at Trinity high school in 2009 and was genuinely moved by this documentary. It's not a typical documentary as it doesn't develop one character for the audience to identify. However, it still captivates the audience because it is authentic, redemptive, and inspiring.

So what's so shocking?

This real story is about a young man and his brother who visit several places of profound suffering. They spend a week living among the homeless on the streets of New York City. They visit a Peruvian home for lost and severely crippled children. Finally, they travel to Africa, interviewing people dying of AIDS and people exiled to a leper colony.  On the surface, the film could depress the happiest person with its depiction of so much suffering in our world.

To the contrary and true to the title
The Human Experience is experiential and touches the heart to bring about human response.  When we connect with others and understand their experience, we learn what it means to be human.

You'll enjoy vivid cinematography, penetrating commentaries, and various views that appeal to all walks of life. The experience will leave you feeling inspired, hopeful, and even more human!

Kudos to the director, Charles Kinnane, and stars, Jeffrey Azize, Clifford Azize, and Michael Campo!

Oh What Beauty

Oh what beauty and depth I see in your face

I leap beyond the horizon into space.

What do I truly see when looking at thee?

The infinite possibilities locked inside of me.

To be lured outside of my limited point of view

I move toward the infinite qualities in you.

When I look into your eyes, I feel so vulnerable,

Eager and willing to step into the unknowable.

Oh what beauty and depth I see in your face

Remembered from a different time and place.

What a great mirror you present to me.

Is it a cosmic mirror reflecting our eternity?

I reach for a broader understanding of the strife

I trust the force of love to bring order to life.

My fellow human keep searching until you find

That elusive spark of light which cures the blind.

Oh what beauty and depth I see in your face

As each moment together is spent in grace.

You melt the covering from my eyes to see

All the reflections of what is meant to be.

The ignorant or foolish games we play

will in the course of time fade away.

But the positive and powerful humankind

That expands and lights up the human mind.

A Moment In Time

Let this moment in time mark the beginning of your dawn
And as your dawn is filled with the many hues of life
Let the hope of sunrise lead you on
The brilliance of your day is yet to come.

Although a long bitter night without sleep do you hold
So tenderly in memory, those memories are just colors
That contrasts the beauty inside of thee.
Yes, the grace, upon our first meeting I have seen.
The innocence that no man creates but comes forth naturally.

With innocence, my friend, your path is freedom, your
Desires are boundless, and your dreams of no end.
So fear not the unknown and darkness
As it is your destiny to win.

I give you only my words as that is my way,
A bird of thought, a bird of prey.
To create and bring to life all that is in flight,
Yes, a dreamer of the night.
I hope to give to you the wings-of-life
For I too have seen the misty morning of dawn.
Truly a time of celebration but in your heart
You are missing the song in a cloud of haze
That we so eloquently call deliberation.

A moment in time to forever treasure
In the prose of rhyme.
My wish is to capture the essence of
Your feelings on this special day
With a tribute in my special way.

Your Personal Growth: Requires a Tender Heart

A Splendid Rose

A splendid rose stood all alone
Surrounded by a wall of stone
Around the wall were flowers too
But neither the wiser each one grew
And as the flowers did dwell
So does man within his shell
Not learning all the things he could
Nor making all the friends he should
Like the autumn leaves fall and die
So will the spirit live a lie
Until the spring of a new rose bud
And the wall destroyed
By the light of love.
My father passed away during my senior year of high school which caused a tremendous emotional upheaval inside me. I wrote the poem above (inspired by "The Rose" by Lucky Van Horn) not long after the loss. I felt compelled to go to the depths of my feelings and express them. Of course losing a loved one is our greatest fear and in fear, I closed myself off from the world. What I didn't realize was that my poem would be a blueprint for my personal growth. The next step in my spiritual journey was about understanding the heart.

The process of my personal growth was similar to a captivating passage in the book, The Sacred Path of the Warrior, by Chogyam Trungpa

"Fear has to be acknowledged. We have to realize our fear and reconcile ourselves with fear. We must face the fact that fear is lurking in our lives, always, in everything we do. On the other hand, acknowledging fear is not a cause for depression or discouragement. Because we possess such fear, we also are potentially entitled to experience fearlessness. Real fearlessness is not a reduction of fear, but going beyond fear.

Going beyond fear begins when we examine our fear: our anxiety, nervousness, concern, and restlessness. If we look into our fear, if we look beneath its veneer, the first thing we find is sadness, beneath the nervousness. Nervousness is cranking up, vibrating, all the time. When we slow down, when we relax with our fear, we find sadness, which is calm and gentle. Sadness hits you in your heart, and your body produces a tear. Before you cry, there is a feeling in your chest, and then, after that, you produce tears in your eyes. That is the first tip of fearlessness. You might think that, when you experience fearlessness, you will hear the opening to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony or see a great explosion in the sky, but it doesn't happen that way. Discovering fearlessness comes from working with the softness of the human heart.

The birth of a warrior is like the first growth of a reindeer's horns. At first, the horns are very soft and almost rubbery, and they have little hairs growing on them. Then, as the reindeer ages, the horns become stronger, developing four points or ten points. Fearlessness, in the beginning, is like those rubbery horns. They look like horns, but you can't quite fight with them. When a reindeer first grows its horns, it doesn't know how to use them. But then the reindeer begins to realize that it should have horns: that horns are a natural part of being a reindeer. In the same way, when a human being first gives birth to the tender heart, he or she may feel incredibly awkward or uncertain about how to relate to this kind of fearlessness. But then, as you experience this sadness more and more, you realize that human beings should be tender and open. So you no longer need to feel shy or embarrassed about being gentle. In fact, your softness begins to become passionate. You would like to extend yourself to others and communicate with them.

When tenderness evolves in that direction, then you can truly appreciate the world around you. Sense perceptions become fascinating things. You are so tender and open already that you cannot help opening yourself to what takes place all around you. When you see red or green or yellow or black, you respond to them from the bottom of your heart. When you see someone crying or laughing or being afraid, you respond to them as well.

When you begin to feel comfortable being a gentle and decent person, your reindeer horns no longer have little hairs on them - they are becoming real horns. Situations become very real, quite real, and on the other hand, quite ordinary. Fear evolves into fearlessness naturally, very simply, and quite straightforwardly."

What I've learned over the years...

When our hearts are not open and connected to the world around us (has a wall of stone around it) we begin to contract and stay in that contracted state. Our natural rhythm is to contract and expand. In other words, experience life's pain and sorrow as well as the joy and excitement of living. By allowing the heart to BEAT in its natural rhythm, fear does not add more bricks to the wall... but helps us develop understanding and compassion.

During the early 1990's my life was far from being extraordinary. It was very ordinary, studying for college classes and spending time with loved ones when fearlessness occurred for me.  It was very calm and gentle time, and I felt connected with the world around me. Then one morning a mysterious thing happened a splendid yellow rose underneath my apartment window which wasn't there the day before! I confirmed with the landlord; landscapers did not plant the rose underneath my window.

"Until the spring of a new rose bud and the wall destroyed by the light of love." I thought of my poem and reflected on the past several years. I had developed little soft rubbery horns!  Finally, I understood love and why personal growth requires a tender heart. I had faced fear and handled each unexpected up or down in my life with wisdom.

The Art of Storytelling: Sand Animation

By Kseniya Simonova, winner of "Ukraine's Got Talent" 2009. Check out her sand animation above. It's an incredible demonstration of the art of telling a story visually that touches the heart and mind. Kseniya executes precision in every detail which draws you into the story even deeper.

Sand animation, also known as sand art, is a term which has two meanings. It is the name given to a style of live performance art, and also to a type of animation. In the former, an artist creates a series of images using sand, a process which is achieved by applying sand to a surface and then rendering images by drawing lines and figures in the sand with one's hands. To increase visibility and to add further artistic aesthetic, a sand animation performer will often use the aid of an overhead projector or light board. In the latter, animators move around sand on a backlighted or front lighted piece of glass to create each frame for their animated films.

Sand Animation is a cool live performance art.

Your Personal Development Begins With Expanding Your Awareness

You must be aware of your potential to express it.  Most people like myself must consistently find ways to explore our human potential.  And, like most, I respond best to visual demonstrations.  The video below displays how our thoughts and feelings can affect our environment health and our personal development.  It's just one visual way we can see how our thoughts and feeling create our reality.

So it is worth the time to work on your mind and heart.  Your personal development begins with expanding your awareness.

Why Do You Keep Creating the Same Reality?

“In this infinite sea of potentials that exist around us, how come we keep creating the same realities?”

“You’ve been conditioned to believe the external world is more real than the internal world.”

-What The Bleep Do We Know!?

What is reality to you?  Who are you?  Are you.. your car, your job title, your gender, your ethnicity, your bank account, your feelings or your past?

I wrote the poem below about 20 years ago after experiencing a change in my consciousness.  No, not drug-induced but caused by my desire to understand the world around me and how it related to my internal world.

Transformation

Suddenly from nowhere, silence captured my soul.
Transformation in life had taken control.
Left without speech and vision, I became cold.
But overflowing rivers threw my mind did grow.
Reflections became clearer than ever before.
A triumph and glory never to be told.
What was once my woe, is now my flight.
Finally a dawning from a long bitter night.
Sparkles of Hope were in dreams of daylight.
Armed fully for battle I near the fight.
All are in time, balance, and rhythm right.
Four seasons, I shall speak and gain my sight.

You can't help but transform your perspective when you realize you are creating your reality. The next step (the fight) is to keep from falling asleep again believing the illusion that time just passes while life just happens.

Yes to find the answer...you must have a curiosity to seek the truth and a desire to know: Why Do You Keep Creating the Same Reality?

Check out the video - What The Bleep Do We Know!? to learn more on this subject.  Also, check out a book called Beyond The Bleep by Alexandra Bruce to discover more in-depth information.
